BIOGRAPHY
Phiri was born in Mozambique
. His artistic career began at Maputo School of fine Art where he
trained alongside Isabel Verde, art Professor and founder of the
school.
Since Childhood Phiri has loved drawing, painting and making
ceramic objects, especially using art as a medium to inspire children.
Phiri is a trained art teacher and has worked in primary school and
projects aimed at helping the victims of the Mozambique Civil War,
which lasted nearly 15 years. He has also exhibited his work extensively
in single collective shows both in Mozambique and Europe.
His ideas, conveyed through figurative pictures and prints, depict eccentricity and a subversive take on life. His paintings portray movement and action - they celebrate being alive - whilst his bright colours are those of his people as they look forward to the future.
Phiri's prints often exude sexual suggestion through angular images of black and white dancing jezebels in a domestic setting. The body language of his subjects usually suggests ease and comfort despite their sometimes ridiculous setting.
Phiri's work is exciting and different. He is well placed to project elegance and self confidence in his interpretation of the word around him.
